Obituary of Joseph Patrick Merrigan
Joeseph Patrick Merrigan passed away suddenly at Grand Falls-Windsor hospital on Monday, September 05,
2022, he was 74 years of age.
Predeceased by his mom Kathleen Merrigan, wife Emma and his Uncle Leo and Aunt Edith. Left
to mourn with fond memories are his fiancée Kathleen Brockerville, sister Marg (Doug), sons Sean
(Holly) and Glenn (Christie). Also left to mourn are his grandchildren Braidie, Lachlan, Reagen, Luke,
Laiya, Emily, Kaden, Zion, Kinley and Kai. As well as, a large circle of friends and relatives.
Joe was born in Carbonear and as a young man moved to the Cape Shore with his Uncle Leo and Aunt
Edith. In 1968 he went to Labrador to work on the construction of the mighty Churchill Falls hydro
electric plant. There he met his wife and raised his two sons. Tragedy struck and he lost his wife to
cancer. Joe persevered and met his now fiancé Kay, and called Churchill Falls his home for 43 years.
While living in Churchill Falls, he was heavily involved in Canadian Rangers, Ground Search and Rescue,
coached Minor Hockey and volunteered at the Curling Club. He had a great passion for any and all
things to do with the great Churchill River. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time at his and other’s
cabins on the river and was well known for knowing the river like no other! Joe retired in 2011 to the
beautiful town of Bishop’s Falls, where he lived since retiring with his love, Kay Brockerville.
Donations can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
