Obituary of Peter Larry Dale Vaters

It is with heavy hearts that our family shares with you the passing of our son and brother, Peter Vaters, at the young age of 37. Peter fought his mental illness for a number of years. He fought with everything he had, yet the illness took his life on July 3rd, 2022.

Peter is predeceased by his father, Dale, who he loved so much, his grandparents, Uncle Bill, Aunt Hope and special little soul. Left to carry his memory are his loving mother, Barbara; his big sister Krista; little brother Michael; sister-in-law Carissa; and the lights of his life, his niece, Kinsley and nephew, Nolan. He also left in the care of his family, his dogs, Serge and Zoe, which he referred to as the “dynamic duo.”

Peter had a deep love for sports, especially the Toronto Maple Leafs, and fitness. He lived by the motto “to change your mood, move your body.” During his battle with mental illness, physical health became an important part of his coping mechanism. Peter was an advocate for mental health, sharing his own experiences to impact change, and eliminating the stigma surrounding mental illness. Peter was known for his love for people, and his kindness toward them. He had many close friends and family-like people that surrounded him, and supported him. As a family, we would like to thank them (you know who you are) for loving, supporting and caring for Peter. If Peter were to write his obituary, he would want to encourage anyone struggling with their mental health to reach out to someone, and for us all to be safe people for others to reach out to. In his words, “I made sure I asked for a spotter when I couldn’t carry the weight. That’s not weakness, that’s strength.”

To honor Peter, we encourage any donations to go to The Salvation Army Centre For Hope which provides services to support mental health and homeless, both causes that were close to Peter’s heart.
