Obituary of Mildred Pearl Sheppard

Mildred Pearl Sheppard nee. Mercer passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, on May 21, 2022 at Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre. She was 78 years old.

Mildred was born on March 14, 1944 in Twillingate, Newfoundland, the only child to her parents Gertrude (Gertie) and George Mercer. Mildred married the love of her life, David (Dave), on April 21, 1965. They raised four daughters together; Susan, Nancy, Lori, and Hollie and have been blessed with six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Mildred was dedicated to her studies and completed vocational school in St. John’s after graduating from high school and started her career as a court stenographer. Mildred was driven to be a successful businesswoman and met many friends over her 30 years as a Tupperware representative throughout Central Newfoundland (you just might find a container she once sold in your cupboard). Later, she ran several small businesses: selling handmade crafts at her store, providing crafting lessons for children, and selling Avon products. She also continued her education and completed a home support program, allowing her to care for people with disabilities.

Mildred loved her family and large circle of friends, and enjoyed spending time outdoors camping, at the cabin, berry picking, and cutting wood with Dave. She also loved playing bingo, Chinese checkers, and having card games with her card club. She had a love for quilting, knitting, crocheting, and other crafts. We have all been so fortunate to have Mildred in our lives and have learned so much from her passion, determination, resiliency, and solid advice. She will be sorely missed.

Mildred is predeceased by daughter Lori Peddle, parents Gertrude and George Mercer, parents in law Margaret and Oswald Sheppard, and sisters in law Barbara Thompson and Elizabeth Sheppard. Left to mourn are husband David, daughters Susan Cole, Nancy Sheppard (Paul Drover), and Hollie Sheppard, son in law Jeff Peddle, sisters in law Jeannette Healey and Shirley Sheppard, brothers in law Bob (Marg) Sheppard, Ron (Marilyn) Sheppard, grandchildren Kelsey and Jordan Cole, Megan and Eric Stewart, and Ashley and Madison Peddle, great grandchildren Sadie Stewart and Calvin Cole.

Visitations will be held from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 on Monday, May 23 at Hoskins Funeral Home in Bishop’s Falls and on Tuesday, May 24 at Saint George Anglican Church in Boyd’s Cove.
