Robert was born on July 5, 1940 to James and Martha Mitchell. He was born and raised in Roberts Arm. It was there he met the love of his life, Jean. They were married for 60 years and raised nine children together. He began his working career at the age of 14 after his dad passed away, washing dishes at a cookhouse. From there he worked underground in many mines, then in Churchill Falls as a driller. In 1966, due to a back injury he finished working and used the opportunity to return to school and received his high school diploma. In 1971, he received his electrical trade and then began working for Polletts Electrical until 1980. He then joined the RCMP and completed his training in Regina, Saskatchewan. He was posted at Gander Airport for 12 years and then retired. In 1992 they moved to Ontario where he was the superintendent in two apartment buildings for 12 years. In 2009 he retired and moved back to Newfoundland. In 2013 they moved into Hollett’s Retirement Home where he remained until his passing. Jean was the loved of his life and no man loved another woman as much as he loved her. He was very proud of all of his children and grandchildren and loved them all very much. He loved to sing and play guitar. You could always find him singing hymns or listening to worship music. He loved to play cards and especially loved to win. He will be greatly missed.
