Obituary of Violet Drucilla Clarke
Violet was born in Phillips Head, NL to William and Ethel Pelley on October 6, 1933. She was one of seven boys and five sisters. On November 25, 1952 she married her true love Sterling Clarke of Cottrell’s Cove. They were blessed with five sons and three daughters. She loved music and one could hear her singing along wherever she was with her gifted voice. She enjoyed cooking, knitting, sewing and she enjoyed outside the home stacking firewood. She also took great pleasure in helping others. She and Sterling were well known to locals and they welcomed strangers into their home and through their businesses which included a convenience store in Phillips Head and following there move to Cottrell’s Cove, with her husband they started a small grocery store (Clarke’s Groceteria). They also operated a pool hall and a fast-food takeout service. She enjoyed her trips up “over the road” which gave her the opportunity to visit with family and friends.
Passed peacefully away on October 24, 2018 at the Twomey Center, Botwood, Violet Drucilla Clarke of Cottrell’s Cove, at the age of 85. She was predeceased by her husband Sterling Clarke; sons: Brian, Wayne; daughter-in-law Daphne. She leaves to mourn her sons: Toney (Shirley), Dennis (Daisy), Terry (Frank); daughters: Daphne (Tom) McConnell, Kathy (Gary) Warman, Darlene (Angus) Butler. She also leaves to mourn 11 grandchildren: David (Tanya), Julie (Raymond), Melanie, Beverly (Jason), Karen (Bill), Crystal (Larry), Lisa, Melissa (Hilbrand), Sherry, Michael, Ryan (Rebecca); 11 great-grandchildren: Amber, Zachary, Hannah, Abigail, Dawson, Nicole, Sarah, Brandon, Lilly, Declan and Kaylee. Also her sister Daisy Gosse; brother Wilfred Pelley (Annetta) and sisters-in-law Hazel Pelley and Jane Pelley and a circle of other relatives and friends. Pastor Jonathan Gascoyne will conduct the funeral service at the Salvation Army Citadel conducted by the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Cottrell’s Cove on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2018 with interment at the Seventh Day Adventist cemetery. Pallbearers are Toney Clarke, Dennis Clarke, Terry Clarke, Michael Butler, Ryan Butler and Bill Boone. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Hoskins Funeral Home, Botwood.
