Obituary of John Saunders

Passed peacefully away on May 22, 2018, John Wesley Saunders aged 88 years at North Haven Manor, Lewisporte.

John was predeceased by his wife, Maisie (Green) parents Donald and Minnie (Roberts) Saunders, brothers Frank (Winnie), Carl (Bernice), Bruce (Rhoda) and sisters May (Gus) Earle, Ivy Saunders.

Left to mourn are his sons Eldon (Patricia), Robert (Christine), Carl (Evelyn); daughters Marion Pilgrim, Pauline (Mike) Windsor, sisters Jean (Robert) Mitchell, and Winnie (Burt) Heath.

Grandchildren Melanie (Steve) Smith, Michael Pilgrim, Jillian Saunders, Megan (Jason) Moisan, Jon-Michael Windsor, Carlye Windsor, Kurwin Saunders, Nikki (Craig) Gordon,  Andrew Saunders, Cheryl (Phil) Tulk, Eva (Vaughn) Clarke.  Great-grandchildren Carter and Adison Gordon, Mia and James Smith, Oliver and Elliot Tulk, Sam Clarke and a large circle of relatives and friends.

John was born on June 12, 1929 at Griquet, the first-born in a family of eight.  His first summers were spent bare-footed until someone gave him a pair leather shoes at aged 12.  He was taken out of school in grade 4 to help fish and cut firewood.  However he loved to read, and always kept up on the news etc., a self-taught and self-educated man.

The Pentecostal message came to Griquet when he was a boy.  The first services were held in his father's twine loft.  He loved to tell the story of how he helped his father Don down under, putting  props up to keep the floor from collapsing when the power of God fell.  His faith continued strong up to his death.

He was a devoted husband and father and worked at many jobs to support his family.  He was a fisherman, boat builder, carpenter, wood cutter and saw mill operator.  His carpentry skills were second to none, all self-taught or quickly learned from co-workers.  His skills were used to build houses, churches, schools, hospitals, bridges, boats etc.  His generation were the builders of our country.

He loved food especially Kentucky Fried Chicken and I suspect by now he's asking for the nearest Heavenly Fried Chicken outlet!

Funeral service will be held at the Windsor Pentecostal Church on Friday May 25, 2018 at 2:00 pm under the direction of Pastor R. Parsons.  Internment to follow at the Windsor Pentecostal Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Phillip Tulk, Craig Gordon, Jon Michael Windsor, Vaughan Clarke, Roy Blake and Jim Penney

Donations gratefully accepted for the Gideon Bible Society.
