James Cooper was born to Steward and Gertrude Cooper at Twillingate, NL on July 16, 1931. He was the sixth child in a family of seven. Four boys and three girls. He was educated at the United Church School at Twillingate, also finished High School at the Salvation Army School. He was enrolled as a soldier at St. John’s and was trained to be a Salvation Army Officer at 91 Lemarchant Road in St. Johns, NL.
He was commissioned as a probationary Lieutenant in 1952 and appointed as an Officer Teacher at the Corps in Trout River. He met and married the love of his life, Lieutenant Evelyn Stuckey on September 3, 1954. Together they raised six children, three boys and three girls.
Together with his wife, Evelyn, they served in corps large and small from Change Islands to St. John’s Citadel. For six and half years, they served as National Evangelists for the Canada Bermuda Territory. They travelled to London England, Amsterdam and Kansas City. They have visited every Province in Canada as well as many states in the USA.
For James, the total aim of his life was to see souls saved. To the end, his platform ministry was the love of his work life. He was always at home preaching the Gospel. He loved people and devoted his life to helping them.
Left to remember him with affection are sons James (Judy), Dean (Michelle), Perry (Leslie); daughters Trudy (Jim), Elizabeth (Frazer), Catherine (Steve); grandchildren Jamie, Janelle, Megan, Melissa, Jessie, James, Matthew, Jonathon, Cassandra, Luke, Sam; great grandchildren Kieran, Maia, Isaac, Luca, Luia, Parker, Madison, Lana, Ellie. Also left to remember him, ssister, Gladys Gould and a large circle of relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by his wife Evelyn; parents Steward and Gertrude Cooper; brothers George, Mark, Hayward; sisters Dorothy and Marjorie.
