Alf was born on January 8, 1932 at the St. Anthony hospital. His first adventure in life was the journey home to Main Brook by kamatik and dog team . He certainly had a lot more adventures during his long life and he loved to share the stories of those adventures. At the tender age of 17 he left home to join the Royal Canadian Navy where he proudly served for 5 years. During those years he travelled the world. He visited many countries but his favourite place and he never forgot his adventures there, was the Hawaiian Island of Oahu. He served with distinction in the engine room and as a gunner on various naval vessels during the Korean Conflict. After the Navy he returned home to Main Brook in 1954 where he married Effie and started a family. As a family they moved several times, but settled in Botwood in January 1962. Together with Effie they had 10 children. After Effie passed away in 1972, he met and married Gussie, who became the love of his life for the next 48 & 1/2 years. Together they had 2 children and fostered many more. He really did love kids!

Alf was known as a very kind and generous person and he was much loved by everyone who knew him. He had a wonderful sense of humour and was a joy to be around. There was almost always smiles and laughter in his presence.

Alf was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Known as Uncle Addie to most, he was also a special uncle to more than 100 nephews and nieces.

Alf thoroughly enjoyed working with and showing kindness to the young people he met, whether it was as a Sunday School teacher or helping the church youth to fund raise for projects. His love of life was everywhere.

Alf had a strong faith and great love for God, he considered his home going to be life’s last great adventure and believed fully that it would be a wonderful and joyous time! He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Honorary pallbearer will be Ted Mills.  Pallbearers will be Alf's sons Rodney, Tom, Rob, Bart, Lorne, Paul, Ron, Varick and Rufus.
